South Western Railway between London Waterloo / Twickenham / Staines and Windsor & Eton Riverside
Notice details
Engineering work is taking place between Staines and Windsor & Eton Riverside, closing all lines. Background information on the work can be found below. Buses will replace trains between Staines and Windsor & Eton Riverside. This work will continue on Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November , and will be extended in scope to include the line between Hounslow and Virginia Water. Background information: Network Rail engineers will be carrying out essential maintenance and renewal work on the railway over 7-days between Staines and Windsor & Eton Riverside. Delivering this work as part of a single seven-day closure allows the completion of multiple jobs at once, rather than having to close the railway on repeated weekends. The main pieces of work will be: Renewing all 28 wheel timbers (the large wooden blocks that carry the rails over bridges) on Mustard Hill bridge, between Staines and Wraysbury. Renewing the old wheel timbers will mean that trains can continue to run quickly and safely over the bridge Renewing 30 'long timbers' (that support multiple rails at junctions) in Datchet Refurbishing the switches and crossings (which allow trains to change tracks) at Staines Renewing parts of the track at Feltham Junction, near Feltham These works will help in the delivery of a safer, more reliable railway for passengers. A project page for this work is available on the Network Rail website . Check before you travel: You can plan your journey using the National Rail Journey Planner . Engineering work is taking place on the footbridge at Tackley, closing platform 2. From Friday 12 June 2026 through until Friday 30 April 2027, trains in the Oxford direction (southbound) will not stop at Tackley station. This is so that a permanent footbridge with lifts can be installed at the station for passengers to cross between the platforms (see background information below). If you are travelling from Tackley towards Oxford, your travel options are as follows: Travel from Heyford station instead (3.5 miles away by road) Catch a train northbound and change at Heyford station. You should cross to the opposite platform upon arrival at Heyford station, and catch a southbound train towards Oxford Catch the Stagecoach S4 bus service from Tackley village which stops at Oxford Parkway station for onward train connections before continuing to Oxford city centre If you are travelling to Tackley from the Banbury direction, your travel options are as follows: Travel from Heyford station instead (3.5 miles away by road) Catch the Stagecoach S4 bus service from Banbury bus station (approximately 6 minute distance from Banbury station) to Tackley village Catch a train to Heyford station then travel a short distance to Heyford Bridge bus stop and catch the Stagecoach S4 bus service to Tackley village from there Please note, if you choose to travel using the Stagecoach bus route mentioned above, this will be at your own cost. However, Great Western Railway have implemented a discounted fare at Oxford ticket office. On presentation of a bus ticket from Tackley to Oxford, customers can claim a £3 discount off their next rail journey to / from Tackley. Please note: You will need to claim the discount at the ticket office at Oxford station. If you are a disabled passenger or a passenger with reduced mobility or additional needs and you are wishing to travel to or from Tackley, please call Great Western Railway's passenger assistance team on 0800 197 1329. Background information: Work is underway to build a new footbridge with two lifts at Tackley station. The bridge will be built on the site of the former scaffold bridge which has now been removed. Network Rail aim to open the new bridge in spring 2027, with the lifts to follow later in the year. To allow the new bridge to be built the southbound platform, for trains towards Oxford, will be closed. No trains will call at this platform until the new bridge opens. More information on the work taking place, and how it affects Tackley village, can be found on the Network Rail website.
